Will My Rug Shed?

While some rugs are more susceptible to shedding than others, you shouldn't experience excessive shedding with any new rug. In fact, a majority of our rugs don't shed at all. There are various factors that contribute to shedding, including the manufacturing process, type of fibre and location of the rug in your home. In this post, we'll look at some of the reasons why rugs shed and what you can do to minimise shedding.

Rugs That Won't Shed

As we mentioned earlier, most of our rugs don't shed. However, if you are looking for a rug that has the absolute least chance of shedding, consider one of these fibres:

Cotton – Cotton is a versatile fibre that makes a great non-shedding rug. Cotton rugs are also affordable and ideal for high traffic areas as they are easy to clean.

Polypropylene – While wool rugs are always popular with our customers, man-made fibres shed far less than wool. They are also water and stain-resistant, pet-friendly and come in a wide variety of colours and patterns.

Flat Weave – Flat weave rugs are another great option if you are worried about shedding. Flat weave rugs have a thin profile and no pile.

Tips to Minimise Shedding

If you have a rug that sheds, try these tips to minimise shedding:

  • Vacuuming your rug on a high setting can loosen fibres and make your shedding problem worse. Try vacuuming on a low setting to ensure your vacuum only picks up dirt and already loosened fibres.
  • Rug pads can help keep your rug in place, which in turn reduces shedding. Rug pads also have a number of other advantages.
  • As a last resort, you can try moving your rug to an area of the home that has less traffic. This can vary from home to home, but generally speaking, bedrooms and studies have the least foot traffic.

Do Wool Rugs Shed?

While a majority of rugs at Rugs Express do not shed, some shedding from Wool Rugs is to be expected. This is not a sign of poor quality! Wool rugs shed because all wool sheds a little. It's the nature of the fibre. New wool rugs are especially prone to shedding as the manufacturing process can leave little pieces of wool fibre embedded into the rug. Don't worry, shedding should subside within the first six months.

Rugs Express is confident that the majority of our rugs will not shed. If you have any concerns about your new rug, please do not hesitate to contact the Rugs Express team. We have a 100% satisfaction guarantee, meaning you can return your rug for any reason within 14 days of delivery.
