How To Upcycle Your Old Rug

If you've recently purchased a new rug, or are about to upgrade, you might be wondering what to do with your old rug/s. The obvious answer (and the easiest option) is to take them straight to the tip. However, with more and more people keen to reduce the amount of waste they produce, upcycling has seen a huge resurgence in recent years.

Upcycling can be defined as:

"The act of taking something no longer in use and giving it a second life and new function. In doing so, the finished product often becomes more practical, valuable and beautiful than what it previously was.”

And there's no reason your old rug can't be upcycled! Here are our favourite ideas.

Make Coasters

Coasters are one of those things you can never have enough off and there's nothing better than a unique coaster to rest your drink on. Trace out squares or circles (or any shape you want!) on the back of your rug and cut away. Rug coasters are surprisingly absorbent too!

Prevent Spillage From Plants

Cut up your rug into smaller pieces and place them underneath your potted plants to prevent leaks from overwatering. The rug pieces will also add a splash of colour to your indoor plants.

Furniture & Floor Protection

Stop furniture from scratching your floorboards and save money at the same time with homemade furniture feet. Rug pieces on the bottom of appliances will also help muffle unwanted noise. Remember, a sharp utility knife will be the most important tool you'll need to repurpose your rug!

Create A Comfy Pet Bed

Old rugs (cut up into smaller pieces) make the perfect warm, cosy bed for your pet and they will love you for it! If you have a cat and you are feeling extra creative, you can even make your own scratching post.

Turn It Into A Bag

This is a good option for thinner, more pliable rugs. Even if you don't have much sewing experience, it's easy to make simple bags like beach bags, tote bags and reusable shopping bags. Cushion covers and throw pillows are other good options.

Feeling inspired? Next time you are thinking about sending a rug (or anything else) to landfill, why not get your creative hat on and give it a new life!
